National Collaborations: Restoration of Montagne Signaux
Montagne Signaux, located on the outskirts of Port Louis, stands as a testament to the challenges facing Mauritius' natural habitats. The area has suffered extensive degradation, including a devastating landslide that further exacerbated the environmental damage. However, amidst these challenges, there is hope in the form of collaborative efforts. BDO Mauritius has partnered with the Forestry Service to undertake a crucial restoration project on Montagne Signaux. With a designated area of 2 hectares, their dedicated team has recruited a technical lead to spearhead the process of revitalizing this vital ecosystem. Together, they aim to restore Montagne Signaux to its former glory, ensuring a sustainable future for this precious natural heritage.

Gecko work with NPCS
At Natir, we're deeply committed to preserving Mauritius' gecko species, including the endangered Phelsuma guimbeaui. In 2023, we successfully translocated 35 geckos to Bras d'eau National Park, leveraging scientific insights and local expertise. Collaborating with NATIR and IG Phelsuma, our efforts not only protect these species but also strengthen local government capacities in sustainable conservation practices, training at least 10 NPCS agents.
NPCS is receiving technical expertise for the restoration and translocation of Phelsuma guimbeaui from Steeves Buckland, a volunteer who is contributing valuable support in these efforts.
Efforts are underway to provide assistance and support to former technicians of NPCS, with ongoing work on an MOU to enhance capabilities and contribute to conservation efforts. Progress updates regarding the MOU will be shared once finalized, with assistance provided by NATIR.
As of the latest update, 35 geckos have been successfully translocated to Bras D’eau National Park, with the translocation efforts spearheaded by Mauritian NPCS members.
Restoration and translocation efforts, including technical expertise and fieldwork, have been conducted by dedicated members of Mauritian NPCS, with support from Steeves Buckland providing technical assistance and guidance.
